Homebody Union is a new specialty coffee bar opening on Moor Street in Fitzroy this September, founded by 2022 World Barista Champion Anthony Douglas. We roast our own coffee, we run a guided ordering service built around our filter and espresso program, and we care about service as much as what’s in the cup.
We’re building our opening team. Four roles, all starting late September.
Café Manager / Head Barista
We’re looking for a manager to run the room. This is a working manager role, on bar and in service five days a week, across rosters, ordering, suppliers and the daily rhythm of the café. We have a clear vision for Homebody Union and set standards for how it runs. Your job is to carry them day to day, lead the team well, and keep the café running smoothly.
A note on experience: you don’t need a specialty coffee CV or a manager title. You do need to have led people, and solid time on a machine that we can build on. Everyone here trains into our coffee program with us, and the standard we hold, in the cup and in the room, is the whole point of the place. Beyond that, we’re hiring for mindset: open minded, humble, willing to keep learning, and genuinely on board with what we’re building.
What the role involves:
- Leading a small team across espresso, filter and our guided ordering service
- Day to day operations: rosters, ordering, suppliers, end of day reconciliation
- Training with our founders, then carrying that standard to the team
- Production support alongside everyone else: packing, labelling, order fulfilment
- Potential opportunities to represent Homebody Union at trade shows and events, in Australia and overseas
The details: full time, Tuesday to Saturday, 7:30am to 3:30pm. Paid above award, with weekend and public holiday penalty rates on top. We trade most public holidays, shared fairly across the team. You’ll need full working rights in Australia and to be Melbourne based. We aren’t able to offer visa sponsorship for this role. Start late September, in the week before we open.
To apply, send your CV and a short note on why you’d like to work with us and why you think you’d be a good fit, to hello@homebodyunion.com.
Barista, Full Time
On experience: you don’t need a specialty coffee CV, but you’ll need a solid foundation behind a machine that we can build on. Everyone trains into our program with us, and the standard we’re aiming for is high, in the cup and in the room, so expect to be pushed to get genuinely good. What matters most is how you show up: open minded, humble, willing to learn, and excited to be part of it. Warmth and curiosity we can’t teach, so bring those.
Every station in this café is a coffee station. You’ll rotate across espresso, filter and our guided ordering service, where you walk customers through the menu, talk flavour and build their order. You’ll learn the coffees deeply enough to sell them, brew them and stand behind them.
What the role involves:
- Rotating across espresso, filter and guided ordering
- Training with our founders and progressing through our program
- Production support alongside everyone else: packing, labelling, order fulfilment
- Potential opportunities to represent Homebody Union at trade shows and events, in Australia and overseas
The details: full time, Sunday to Thursday, 7:30am to 3:30pm. Paid under the Restaurant Industry Award with weekend and public holiday penalties on top. Pay is reviewed as your training progresses. We trade most public holidays, shared fairly across the team. You’ll need full working rights in Australia and to be Melbourne based. We aren’t able to offer visa sponsorship for this role. Start late September, in the week before we open.

Weekend Floor and Service
This is our weekend floor role, working the busiest hours of the week. You’ll welcome people at the door, guide them to their table, run the takeaway till, pour water, run coffees and keep the room feeling looked after. It’s the role that sets the tone of the café, so we’re hiring for warmth, curiosity and an open mind, no coffee experience needed.
It’s also designed as a doorway. You’ll learn our coffees well enough to talk about them from day one, and if you want to head toward the machine, there’s an honest pathway: floor first, coffee training with us in your first months, then your first bar shifts covering leave and event travel as they come up.
What the role involves:
- Welcoming, seating and looking after guests
- Running the takeaway till and supporting the bar
- Learning our coffee program from the ground up
- Production support alongside everyone else: packing, labelling, order fulfilment
The details: permanent part time with guaranteed days and paid leave, not casual. Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 2pm. Paid under the Restaurant Industry Award with weekend penalty rates on every shift. Extra hours come up by agreement as the café grows. We trade most public holidays, shared fairly across the team. You’ll need valid working rights in Australia and to be Melbourne based. Student visa holders are welcome for this role, the hours sit comfortably within student work limits. We aren’t able to offer visa sponsorship for this role. Start late September, in the week before we open.
